What we do

World is a mix-up of deeply knotted histories. Continuous evidence of events is history. What is history? It means it had happened. However, we are in the norm of calling artifacts from history. History changes with new findings. Archaeology is the study of ancient cultures especially by excavation and analysis of physical remains. However, the existence of certain facts and events without factual archaeological evidences are still the truths and that too is history.

A Scientist, Historian, or an Archaeologist cannot be specific of the beginning of anything. The beginnings and the history of Ramayana cannot be determined, as it is covered with a cloak of shadows. It is complicated to judge its pre history and the known history will change with new findings. We have to probe legends and folklores as they too are based on facts. It should be clearly understood that history is not archaeology which is only a material evidence of history.

In the western world science and religion under no circumstances walked together. Scientists find it risky to combine their religious viewpoint with their scientific research. They hang up the religious view when scientific researches are done, as most religions never promote scientific penetration. Most scientists belong to some religion or the other but some are not deep admirers of it. Researcher should be independent and devoid of personal beliefs and should not be predisposed. A researcher has to tell the world of his findings.

However, the history of Heladiva (Sri Lanka) extends to millenniums prior to recorded history, which is now historically and archaeologically accepted. As such it is quite frivolous to accept that the history of Heladiva began with the advent of Vijaya. Our history is recorded in historical chronicles as Dipawansa, Mahawansa and many more. These compilers have not taken an interest in the indigenous clans that lived in Sri Lanka then viz, the Yakshas, Nagas, Rakshas, and the Devas.

The compilers of the historical chronicles of Sri Lanka were Buddhist priests who at most times gave celebrity to Buddha Dhamma and welded the basic principles of social, political, and economic life into an all-inclusive theory called religion. It changed the basics of our history.

Millenniums before the advent of Vijaya, foreigners authored Vishnu Purana, Skanda Purana, and Ramayana. Vishnu Purana states that Vishnu waged war with the Hela Kings Hiran Kasub (Iraniya) and Makuta, and describes the populace of Heladiva as highly developed and civilized and it is established in Skanda Purana and Ramayana. Rama invaded Heladiva millenniums after Vishnu and Skanda. Matsaya Purana states that Rawana’s son Indrajith bombed the invaders hiding in the clouds using a bow that could send out 12000 arrows per minute. All these descriptions confirm that the populace of Heladiva was highly developed.

In this website Ramayana Trail Executive Committee takes all pains to present the facts and findings fitting to Sri Lankan oral and recorded history that relates to its indigenous inhabitants in a simple manner. This will help the general reader to reach unbiased conclusion. For illustration the Rama - Rawana episode for which facts exists. Ramayana is based on a genuine incident but vital evidence is missing. Most historians of the past have not explored the pre - Vijaya era and it seemed more fitting to state the existing facts that bond, recorded, and oral history. Taking it into consideration an attempt is made to point up the incidents that confront recorded history. However a similar danger will arise if the browser attempt to reach self-confident conclusions based only on recorded history.

The Central Government of India appointed a committee of 14 historians to identify the authenticity of Ramayana but was unable to find any historical or archaeological evidence in India. However, Sri Lanka can prove the validity of Ramayana with available archaeological and historical evidences.

Taking all these into thought an attempt is made to indicate the incidents that meet established history. However, the browser may be confused by the differing theories of the origins and its analysis. I leave the reader to assess the findings and the point of views to reach an impartial conclusion.
